Hi sewfriends!
It is knit dress weather season! So I come to you with a review of Butterick 6388 - View D. When I first saw this pattern, I was attracted by the lines, the pockets and the collar. So I went on McCall’s website and ordered it with a bunch of fall appropriate patterns. While shopping for some fall fabric at my local Fabricville store, I felt some type of way about this Royal blue textured knit. I’m a fan of comfy knit dresses in fall.
It was so much fun sewing with this fabric. The knit is very stable. So I had no stretching when working on curves and hems. This is a relatively quick make. I worked on it on Saturday and wore it to church on Sunday. I had pre-cut the material a couple of weeks ago.
As you can see, this dress has some nice curves around the neck and the back yoke is curved. So one tip I can give you when working on these seams is to take the time to staystich and clip the curves to fit the yoke and collar if needed. Choose a stable knit fabric for this project. It will make your life easier. Also, it will give your collar a better appearance since it will be able to stand on it’s own. Fabric suggestion according to McCall’s: Sweater knit or French Terry knit. I went with a double knit.
When attaching the collar, I must have put in a hundred of pins to make sure that it will not shift. Due to the nature of my knit, the attaching the collar process was easy. I will insist once again,if you wish to have a successful collar for this dress, please make sure to select a stable knit!!! Or you may end up with a floppy collar…
I went for a size small (8-10) when cutting this pattern, which is my usual McCall’s size. After comparing my body measurements to the finished garment measurements, I concluded that it was the best size for me. I never skip that steps which usually allows me to get a almost perfect fit from the start. I added 2 inches to the bodice where indicated. Since I have a long torso, I often make this adjustment on my dresses. I took in about one inch at the center back seam to reduce the amount of excess fabric I had due to my sway back. Otherwise, the fit was great.
I look chic when wearing this “athleisure” knit dress. The integrated pockets, the dropping shoulders, the collar all contributes to the unique look of this dress! So this knit dress is a win for me!

Your dress is beautiful. I’m almost done making mine (your blog post encouraged me to get started after I’d already bought the pattern). I am using a sweatshirt fleece from Joann’s like the dress on the pattern envelope, but I discovered partway through sewing that it only stretches in one direction. I am also fairly new at this and didn’t see any special instructions that said to use a stretch stitch. I put my collar in this morning, and as predicted, it is quite the struggle to get it over my head and (especially!) back off again. Did you use a stretch stitch to put yours together? If so, did you use one for all the seams, or just the collar? Thanks!

I love it in this color.i made it in large, grey Ponte knit. I felt like I was swimming in it when all was said and done. I went back and took out the pockets and took it in a bit at the sides. I love this dress but not on me. It looks great on you!

Just made this and wore it to church Sunday. I had the problem with one of the knit I used, it was an ity knit and wasn’t stable enough but it came out wearable though. Luv yours and the fabric 😍😍
