Hi sewfriends!
After letting my Burda Style magazine mini-collection collect dust for 2 years, I finally had the courage to venture and trace my first 2 patterns! I was subscribe from spring 2014 to Spring 2015 (5 magazines in total). As I was receiving them, I was folding the corners of the pages of the pattern I wanted to try. Looking at all those lines made me dizzy. I pushed the task for 2 years. Since I’m in vacation most of the summer, I put on my July to-do list to complete at least one Burda pattern. I am proud to say that I have completed 2 dresses so far! Today I am sharing dress 1 out of 2! My birthday dress (I’m a July 19th baby)!
This dress can be found in the Spring 2015 issue, # 101. It is called the Tea dress. It is an 11 pieces pattern. Once I took the time to understand the lines on the pattern sheet, it wasn’t to complicated… I sat at my cutting table and patiently traced those lines on pattern paper.
However, following the sewing instructions was quite challenging… I am used to reading instructions and looking at some type of visual instructions when constructing garments. I had no visual information to support me through the process. Sewing the bodice was pretty straight forwards… However, putting that skirt together required every little part of my brain to focus on the projet. See… the skirt has an integrated pocket… It was my first time constructing one…! The instructions were so confusing…
It was actually simple to put together…. But I kept trying to understand the written instructions… To this date, I have no idea what it was saying. All I know is that I looked at the pieces and figured a way in my head to make it work together…!
I really love this neckline on me. Also, I love me a good invisible zipper in a dress. It just push everything to the next level! I don’t know if I can ever go back to installing a regular zipper to my dresses and skirts.
Overall, I am pretty pleased with my Tea dress and you can expect to see at least another version of this dress! I made no changes to the original pattern and I got a pretty good fit on the first trial!
I may re-activate my Burda Style Subscription this fall! I will feel less guilty of collecting them now that I’ve ventured in the Burda Style magazine pattern world!

Happy Birthday and love the dress. I love the fabric. I have about 4 years worth of burda magazines and I have made a dress, skirt, and I believe two tops from them. It didn’t take me too long to figure out the tracing. As for the sewing instructions I would read through then go to my sewing resources and figure out the best way to construct aspects of the garment.

Good job! I have a collection of Burda magazines, too. They’re patterns are so gorgeous, aren’t they? But man, if only they could make them easier to trace and to follow the instructions. And I wish that the paper patterns at the store were half as cool. If they would take their magazine patterns and turn them into commercial patterns at the store, I think they’d make a killing! Sadly, they discontinued their US subscription so if I were to subscribe internationally it would cost me $100/year. I ** might ** treat myself as a christmas present, though. We’ll see . . .
Thank you Carmen! I discovered after writing this post that Burda Style US magazine was discontinued 🙄🙄. I am not sure I’m ready to pay for the UK subscription either….! They have some great patterns and I can’t wait to make more!!
